Lluís Sabadell Artiga IN RESiDENCE at the School Collserola

TRANSFORMA_ACCIONS: URBAN TRANSFORMATION ACTIONS OF COLLECTIVE CREATIVITY TO IMPROVE THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL SURROUNDINGS EXPLORING THE ENVIRONMENT I

After thinking about the neighbourhood and possible sites for intervention, a route is designed and the pupils go out to explore it with Lluís Sabadell Artiga. They perform two main tasks: observing and photographing elements and aspects that could be improved; and interviewing local residents to see what they like about the neighbourhood, what they don’t like and what they feel could be improved.

EXPLORING THE ENVIRONMENT II

After local residents’ opinions have been compiled on video and in a written script, the final exploratory stage begins: the search for empty or dysfunctional spaces where the art intervention can be staged. The videos and summaries written in previous exploratory phases are reproduced on the blog of the residency.

POSSIBLE SPACES FOR INTERVENTION

Based on the research conducted and taking into account the information gathered, a list is drawn up of possible spaces or situations that the invervention could focus on: the steps up to Torre Baró, Torre Baró Castle, Rambla del Caçador, the sculpture stolen from Plaça de Karl Marx, the “ghost” sports centre, the dirt, the school bell, the towers known as pirulos in Josep Martí Park and the loudspeakers in the place where young people from the neighbourhood habitually meet. A more exhaustive study is made of these spaces and situations.

REFERENCES CONCERNING ART AND ECOLOGY, URBAN ART AND SOCIAL ART

To obtain references and sources of inspiration ahead of the urban intervention to be carried out, several works that Lluís Sabadell Artiga finds particularly interesting are viewed and discussed. The blog contains a PowerPoint document featuring these works and the full list of artists represented in the compilation.

VISITS AND WORK AT CAN MASDEU

Two mornings are devoted to visiting and exploring Can Masdeu, which Lluís Sabadell Artiga defines as: “not like a trendy squat, but a place where a different way of looking at life than we are accustomed to is put into practice: more community, more ecological and less aggressive towards the planet and others. A social laboratory to promote an open culture, one based on exchange (of spaces, jobs, materials…)”. Lídia, who is in charge of visits to Can Masdeu, takes the group around the market gardens, explains how the house is organised and operates and shows them the main areas. The second morning session features a land art workshop led by Lluís Sabadell Artiga, whilst Belinda Tato (Ecosistema Urbano) presents examples of interventions that she has developed at her studio and by students at various workshops.

nouBARRISnou: DESIGN OF THE FIRST INTERVENTION

After the meeting with the councillor for Nou Barris, the work with Belinda Tato and analysing the research conducted so far, the group together established the first intervention that will take place. This involves generating a participatory process amongst residents in the neighbourhood, particularly young people, through specially designed letterboxes that will be located at the sites selected as possible spaces for intervention. This first project is given a title: nouBARRISnou. To carry out this first intervention, the pupils are organised into commissions engaged in different tasks: design, construction, institutional contacts and resources, press and communication.

DESIGN AND COMMUNICATION

In order to encourage local residents to play an active, creative role, a strategy was designed to include several channels for participation. The nouBARRISnou logo is designed, as are the letterboxes and postcards that will be attached to them, posters are produced and a project blog, open to all, is created (http://noubarrisnou.wordpress.com/). The blog includes a video made by the pupils to explain the blog nouBARRISnou project.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE LETTERBOXES

Fifty letterboxes are built and painted, ready to be installed at fifty points around the district of Nou Barris.

INSTALATION OF THE LETTERBOXES

On Monday, 22 March 2010, the letterboxes are installed at strategic points around the neighbourhoods of Canyelles, Guineueta, Roquetes and Torre Baró in the district of Nou Barris. Hundreds of posters and postcards for local residents to write their opinions on are also distributed.

COLLECTION OF THE POSTCARDS

Participation by using the postcards is very high, and the comments and proposals are very interesting. The postcards are all collected, ordered and scanned, and some are posted on the nouBARRISnou blog.

WORKING SESSIONS AT SCHOOLS AND THE ROQUETES COMMUNITY PLAN

Pupils from Institut Collserola present several sessions at schools in Roquetes (Institut Galileo Galilei, Escola Gaudí, Institut Guineueta, Escola Tomás Moro) to explain their project and gather creative proposals to improve the environment.

EXHIBITION OF nouBARRISnou BY THE DISTRICT COUNCIL

From Friday, May 21 to June 4, Nou Barris district council presents the participatory exhibition by Lluís Sabadell Artiga and fourth-year secondary pupils at the Institut Collserola school. The show, which illustrates the work process behind the project, is also aimed at generating continuing participation.

PARTICIPATORY SESSION

On Wednesday, May 26, a participatory session takes place at Roquetas Residents Association. The session is led by Lluís Sabadell Artiga, Belinda Tato of Ecosistema Urbano and a group of pupils from Institut Collserola. The purpose of the session is to define the intervention that will be carried out on the steps that lead up from Roquetes to Torre Baró. To this end, the session is organised into three main sections: 1) describing the space (morphological, urban, natural and social factors); 2) observation of needs for improvement and requirements of users; and 3) design of the type of intervention to be carried out. Possible interventions on the steps are suggested during the session.

ART INTERVENTION ON THE STEPS FROM ROQUETES TO TORRE BARÓ

On Friday, July 2, Lluís Sabadell Artiga and pupils from Institut Collserola carry out the art intervention on the steps going up from Roquetes to Torre Baró. Continuing the processes developed during the course, they create an ephemeral intervention to culminate the various actions undertaken as part of the nouBARRISnou project. In this intervention, a number of chairs are installed along the whole flight of steps, inviting passers-by to rest a while in the shade and enjoy the view over Barcelona. The group also install several nests made by recycling the mailboxes.
