Laura Llaneli IN RESiDENCE at the School Quatre Cantons

Visit to the exhibition by Laura Llaneli

The first session with Laura Llaneli took place in the context of a solo exhibition at the ADN-Platform gallery in Sant Cugat del Vallès. The visit enabled the group to discover the artist’s creative universe and to meet her personally and make initial context. This meeting was the starting-point for research into music, sound and silence.

What is sound?

After preliminary research and the discovery of several audio pieces, the question of silence and sound was raised. This question led the group to visit this point you will visit the anechoic and reverberating chambers of La Salle, with a guided tour of the various spaces dedicated to the discovery, study of and experimentation with sound. Following this experience, a series of listening exercises was assigned as homework.

How to record sound. Sound recording and editing workshop

To conduct the experience of sound recording, editing the audio to create short sound compositions, a workshop took place at the Joan Miró Foundation with Laura Llaneli and Serafín Álvarez. Later, in the classroom, the editing work continued to enable the group to learn how to operate the Audacity programme.

Building contact microphones

With the aim of obtaining their own tool to record sound at the school and surrounding neighbourhood, the group built contact microphones. Several sessions were devoted to the construction of these mics and to recording sounds ready to be edited.

Percussion: scores and recordings

The proposal was made to create the first sound pieces based on handy materials and objects. Coordinated and following a graphic representation (score) composed in small groups, the pupils performed the first sound pieces, which were recorded.

First rehearsals in groups

After the experimentation with sound, work began on sound references and themes of interest to the pupils. Once the first ideas had been given shape, a session to pool these first recordings was organised in the rehearsal rooms at Can Felipa.

Visit to the exhibition room and rehearsal

Once the themes of each creation had been decided, a work session was organised to decide how the materials forming the different pieces should be presented to construct an installation generating a small stage on which to produce a site-specific work.

Final presentation

The presentation took place at the Àngels Barcelona 2 gallery, where the pupils performed a short action before, with the artist Laura Llaneli, describing and presenting their project.
