Eulàlia Garcia Valls IN RESiDENCE at the School Antaviana

https://eulaliagarciavalls.com/

Eulàlia Garcia Valls graduated in Arts and Design from Escola Massana (Barcelona) and is currently a resident artist at Hangar (Barcelona, from 2019 to 2021). She was recently selected to form part of BIAM 2020 (the City of Amposta Art Biennial) and she is a finalist for the Miquel Casablancas Award, in the project category.

She was also a resident artist at De Ateliers (Amsterdam, from 2017 to 2019), at Fabra i Coats (Barcelona, from 2015 to 2016) and at Estruch (Sabadell, in 2014, with the Placa Turca group).

In 2019, she won the Sala d’Art Jove prize in the creation category, with the project “installing a false ceiling”, and she has taken part in the exhibitions “TRAFIC” (Barcelona), “Speak, memory” (W139, Amsterdam), “Rooms of Now #2” (Middelburg, Vleeshal), “Once a Closely Guarded Secret” (De Ateliers, Amsterdam) and “Pas 4: Collapse. Installing a false ceiling” (Sala d’Art Jove, Barcelona).

Her work takes form through the concept of add-ons, gestures and interventions that seek to examine the relationship between the context they are in and the behaviour we adopt within that context. These are barely-perceptible transformations that aim to cause a state of reconsideration, negotiation and discomfort between the elements involved in the chosen environment. Her work is based on what exists, with immersive proposals that are specific in relation to temporality and the place where each project is carried out.

Institut Escola Antaviana is known for an educational approach that considers inclusion and attention to diversity as one of its main objectives. Its pupils are a very broad cross-section of the social spectrum of the neighbourhood and show a very high degree of diversity in terms of individual educational needs and socio-economic background. Antaviana also has strong links with families, the neighbourhood and its facilities, such as the Ateneu de Nou Barris, which is a reference point for the entire educational community.
