Edu Comelles IN RESiDENCE at the School Pau Claris

Tensar el fil [Tensing the Thread]

Sound installation

The sound installation Tensar el fil [Tensing the Thread] features a series of sounds recorded and edited by the pupils during the course, sounds that therefore mix with and modify each other. The sounds come from the school itself, the neighbourhood, the pupils' homes and so on, including their native languages as well as various research experiments with the sonorous quality of everyday noises.

All the sounds generated can be heard at: https://soundcloud.com/en-resid-ncia.

An excerpt from the final work is available at: https://soundcloud.com/educomelles/tensarelfil-01

Presentation

The presentation of the installation Tensar el fil [Tensing the Thread] took place at 7 pm on 15 May 2015 in the main room at the Convent of Sant Agustí. Presenting the work, the pupils and Edu Comelles described the piece and the process behind its creation. The event was attended by the pupils' families, schoolmates and teachers, as well as representatives from ICUB, Barcelona Education Consortium and people linked to the world of culture.

Text of the presentation

Four pupils from the group gave the presentation based on the text the whole group had prepared together. There follows the full text of this presentation:

"Hello, good afternoon everyone.
We are fourth-year secondary pupils at Pau Claris secondary school. Over the last academic year, we have worked with the artist Edu Comelles. Over the course of the year, we have learned to appreciate small sounds that we were indifferent to before, and thanks to that learning we finally built this building this installation.
We will now explain the whole process behind this project. When we started, we didn't know that we would finally end up doing what we did. We began by studying other artists who made sound compositions using kitchen utensils and other objects, and Edu told us what sound is. Then we built a contact microphone, we played with Audacity, editing sounds, and we made some harps. An important day was the first time we heard the sound of some glasses through headphones - it was really exciting.
We recorded many different sounds: at school, in the classroom, in the street and at our homes. We also recorded words in the different languages we speak. Sometimes, we had to record the nicest sound of the day, or the loudest and so on. By the end, we had about 1,500 sound files.
We now present the sound installation that came out of this process, which we had no idea what it would be like when we started the work. It is an installation with no end, and which mixes all the sounds. Some are nice sounds, others are very loud… when you listen to it, it is as if you were walking around a city, listening to all the sounds that are made there...”
