Isabel Banal IN RESiDENCE at the School Barcelona - Congrés

Hand luggage and with white background

Isabel Banal proposes a reflection on the idea of loads, the fact that everyone carries things from one place to another. She will work on loads both from a material standpoint (what we need to live, due to necessity or consumerism) and as metaphor (thoughts, experiences and so on).

The artist will take her works known as loaded figures as the starting point. These loaded figures are a series of personages moulded in plaster, a reworking of the figurines found in popular Nativity scenes, which often include men and women carrying farming and craft products. In this case, the loads that Banal’s carry are contained in contemporary recipients: paper or plastic bags, cardboard boxes, water bottles, backpacks… These figures form part of a series of installations with such titles as Rumiant, Feix petit pel camí creix, Allez and Ascencioni.

This reference point, combined with research, observation and study of the pupils’ immediate surroundings will generate a sculptural installation. Photography and documentation will play an important role in the creative process.
