Gerard Guix / Montse Rodríguez IN RESiDENCE at the School Moisès Broggi

sessions

BEGINNINGS
At the start of the project, Gerard Guix and Montse Rodríguez proposed sharing the process of creating a theatre play with the pupils. The idea was for the young people to take part in their decision-making processes, becoming part of the process.

FIRST TERM
The first term, from October to December, was spent getting to know each other. Ricard and Montse introduced themselves, told the pupils about how they work and showed examples of their productions (in fact, the artists invited the group to see one of their works, Ricard de tercer, at the Sala Flyhard). In this initial period, they also enabled the pupils to discover and try for themselves the different disciplines involved in creating a theatre production: from writing the text to directing the actors, as well as building the set and designing costumes, lighting and so on. In short, the idea was for the pupils to try their hands at all these disciplines and choose the ones they felt most comfortable working with.

SECOND TERM
After the Christmas holidays, Gerard and Montse started work on the play they wanted to present at the end of IN RESIDENCE. They created their plot based on ideas that they had asked the pupils to suggest in the first term: in the play, the Gràcia neighbourhood disappears without trace. How will all the children left without parents react (and survive)? What will the government do? Based on this initial idea, they asked the pupils to choose the discipline they wanted to work in: dramaturgy, acting, set design, costumes, lighting, sound and so on. Each pupil was to choose an area for which they would be responsible, though they could also intervene, directly or in directly, in other areas. In groups, the pupils began to work separately: the dramaturgy group started to write dialogues based on Gerard's plot, the acting group began to improvise with Montse; the set design group worked with Fanny, deciding how to create the different scenes in which the play is set, and so on.

THIRD TERM
Over the closing three months of the academic year, with the first act more or less written, production began with the actors. Little by little, the performers realised the difficulties entailed in acting: learning your lines, acting naturally, voice projection, etc.

The last month in the project process was extraordinarily intensive, with extra rehearsal sessions. Little by little, the project took shape.

ACTIVITIES LINKED TO THE RESIDENCY

Over the course of the residency, several activities were organised, involving various companies and theatres:

- 28 October 2015: attendance of rehearsals of Albert Boronat's play Snorkel, directed by Aleix Fauró, at the rehearsal site of La Virgueria theatre company.

- 22 November 2015: attendance at a performance of Albert Boronat's play Snorkel, directed by Aleix Fauró, at the Sala Beckett / Obrador Internacional de Dramatúrgia.

- 25 November 2015: visit to the Teatre Lliure to learn about a large theatre from the inside.

- 2 December 2015: attendance at a performance of Ricard de tercer, a play by Gerard Guix, directed by Montse Rodríguez, at the Sala Flyhard.
