Albert Quesada IN RESiDENCE at the School Angeleta Ferrer

Our starting point begins by asking a provocative question. What is flamenco when separated from its traditional codes? While we do not perform orthodox flamenco, we are captivated by its raw power, by the energy that makes the ground shake and connects directly with the core of our being. We want to understand where that powerful intensity comes from.

My way of working comes from two life experiences: my years as a dancer with ZOO-Thomas Hauert, starting from an intelligent body, and my practice as a creator, where every tool used has been tested on stage before reaching the classroom. I work with improvisation games and scores because I believe in dance that has no fixed form, in the drive that comes from awareness and responsibility, and in constantly challenging our bodily habits.

For example, we start by listening to Whitney Houston and discovering hidden flamenco rhythms, moods and forms. We are curious about how this fierceness appears in unexpected places: in opera, in pop, in music that we would never have associated with Andalusia. Flamenco is much more than the stereotypes of red dresses, intense gazes and noisy shoes. Using improvisation as a tool for exploration and exchange, we seek a conscious body and a mind open to infinite possibilities.

Our search takes us on a journey through time and the history of music. We imagine gypsy bodies dancing to rhythms that come from faraway places, from migrations, from all those peoples who have left their mark on this art form, and we look for flamenco elements in pop, rock and classical music, among others.

What moves us is the closeness, the raw intimacy of a tablao, but brought into a contemporary space. We work with contact dance, with group scores, with games that train dancers to play and dance together. Dance is pure joy, alone or in a group, duos or trios, but always with the drive to discover. Finally, our goal is to find the duende: that inexplicable magic that makes a gesture, a cry, a silence, pierce your soul.
